ATHENS, Greece -- Two of the country's most notorious criminals escaped on Sunday (February 22nd) from Athens's maximum-security prison, Korydallos. It was their second such daring escape in three years. Vassilis Paleokostas and Albanian accomplice Alket Rizai managed to escape just days before the start of the trial for their first escape in 2006. The two climbed into the helicopter using a rope ladder thrown to them in the prison's courtyard. Guards fired at the helicopter but failed to prevent the escape. Police found the aircraft abandoned by a main road in Athens' northern suburb of Kapandriti. The pilot was bound and had a hood over his head. He told police a couple chartered the helicopter for a trip from the central town of Itea to Athens. Following the prison break, several high-level officials from the justice ministry and prison management resigned, including Korydallos Director Leonidas Karabekios and penitentiary system inspector Apostolos Economou. Two fugitives are hiding in the outskirts of Athens, from the police not any measure taken
The Albanian fugitive from Greece prison Alket Rizai, is preparing the terrain to return to Albania. On the other side, the Greek police have not taken any measure. The Greek media wrote yesterday in an article about Rizai and the Greek Vassilis Paleokostas, who was now a week that were escaped from high-security prison in Greece so spectacularly. According to Greek media, the two fugitives from Koridhalos prison in Athens, together with the Greek Vassilis Paleokostas might be hiding in the outskirts of Athens and are planning to enter to Albania. Recent information revealed that however, the police was aware that Vassilis Paleokostas and the Albanian Alket Rizai were preparing the escape from prison, they did nothing to prevent. Greek media quote: "It is likely that the two criminals are waiting that the police forces to low control measures so they can move freely to another country." Meanwhile, 15 units of Special Forces continue the research operations in the mountainous regions of Central Greece, which are familiar to Vassilis Paleokostas. Thus, police are searching the Albanian Panagiotis Papas, a key figure who has helped them to escape, and was a collaborator of Alket Rizai in his first escape. Greek media write about prisoner Kostas Samaras, made famous for his attempts to escape, and commented by his old friend "With the money and help any one can escape! Paleokostas and Rizai had not many options to choose for escaping as they were under very safe measures in Koridalos. This is the most painful way to escape from Koridalol", says Samaras for the Serbian media, adding that" if you have a mind unclouded and are attentive you can escape from any prison, even with the high-security measures."
The Research
Sources let known that the secret services are checking the last calls made from the mobile phones that were seized by the houses of the persons who were involved in the first escape, in order to have any possible detail about the new location of the two fugitives. The police are investigating the montage taken by prison cameras, which are installed in order to record everything that happens in the hallway between the two criminal’s cells, even during the air hour, when they stood outside in the yard.

Bosnian police forces mounted an overnight operation in the southern suburbs of the capital of Sarajevo, hunting down nine armed convicts who had earlier escaped from a prison in the eastern Bosnian town of Ustikolina.
By midnight, police had located and arrested four escaped convicts while the other four were arrested by Wednesday early morning. The search for the remaining ninth prisoner continues, police officials said and added that all available police forces have been deployed and engaged in the search.
Police from both Bosnian entities – the Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim)-Croat Federation and Republika Srpska – participated and cooperated in this operation.
According to the Sarajevo police spokesman, Dragan Miokovic, nine convicts escaped from the Ustikolina prison on Tuesday evening after a brief armed mutiny, in which they overwhelmed their guards, stole two vehicles and drove towards Sarajevo. The group included several convicted murderers and drug traffickers.
Federal Justice Minister Feliks Vidovic said one prison guard was injured and hospitalized during the mutiny. He added that over the past few days there were no indications of any trouble in the prison in Ustikolina, and there were currently no other details about the incident or the motive behind the escape.

Greece arrests suspected weapons-supplier

ATHENS, Greece -- Members of the police anti-terror squad arrested a man Sunday (November 1st) suspected of having supplied weapons to the terrorist organisation Sect of Revolutionaries. The suspect was carrying a bag with a gun, a protective vest and wireless transmitters when detained near Athens. Police say he is a close ally of mafia boss Vassilis Paleocostas, who managed to escape an Athens prison by helicopter earlier this year.
